The project
WHILE LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO WELCOME OUR FRIENDS AND GUESTS IN LISBON, WE STUMBLED UPON AN ENCHANTING 18TH CENTURY BUILDING. LOCATED IN THE OLD CULTURAL QUARTER AND STANDING IN ONE OF THE MOST ROMANTIC SQUARES IS THE SANTA CLARA.
Santa Clara 1728 is surrounded by monuments, beautiful palaces, and a lovely park with stunning views of the river. We were charmed by the beauty of the place, and quickly decided to make this our new family home.
We renovated the building alongside our good friend and architect, Manuel Aires Mateus. His architectural style, a soft and serene conversation between elements and time, respected the building’s history while introducing a modern elegance. The outcome, a light-filled peaceful sanctuary within the city.

The house
THE BUILDING'S SENSE OF INTIMACY IS ACCOMPLISHED THROUGH A SENSITIVE INTERPLAY OF INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR FEATURES. THE GENEROUS WINDOWS FRAME THE UNIQUE BRILLIANCE OF LISBON'S LIGHT, WHICH SPILLS OVER THE CITY AND CAN BE SEEN REFLECTED IN THE RIVER BELOW.
Within the cool shelter of its walls, the house has a secluded garden. Typical of the architectural vernacular of this area, the garden provides a tranquil place for visiting, quiet relaxation, or reading.
Friends and guests are invited to share meals at our communal dining table. The table, as in many homes, is a special place to gather. It is where we come together daily to dine, to laugh, and to share.
A home naturally reflects the life, story, and family who live there. The daily routines, the shifting rhythms of the season, the energy of the people which inhabit it, are all elements that make a home unique. As our family house, Santa Clara 1728 is a special place where we invite our guests to make themselves at home and share in this experience. The house is furnished and detailed with delicate yet sophisticated touches, which thoughtfully consider the comfort and needs of our guests. Our wish is that you feel the same warmth, ease, and delight of coming home.
