HOLISTIC MANAGEMENT: RESPECTING NATURE'S RITUALS
HERD ANIMALS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE PORTUGUESE MONTADO. THEY PLAY A CRITICAL ROLE WITHIN THE COMMUNITY AS WELL AS THE LANDSCAPE.
Having a holistic approach to farming and agriculture would not be complete without the presence of animals. For this reason, we have devoted ourselves to learn and develop Holistic Management best practices.
Holistic Management is an approach developed by biologist Allan Savory to restore grassland soils and minimize the negative effects of climate change and desertification. Grazing animals are an essential part of grassland systems like the Montado. Therefore, it made sense to raise herd animals in a way, which would have a positive, rather than destructive impact on the environment. Because these animals have evolved alongside grasslands, their digestive tracts are not only responsible for cycling organic matter, but the very act of grazing is a vital act in balancing the ecosystem.

The circle of life in our land
We learned the importance of each element present in Nature, and their vital role to a healthier land - we wish to care for our property, inspired by Nature's rituals in the wild.
Our animals are raised in a way to ensure that our fields are not overgrazed. We keep the herbs moving and rotate the time spent in certain pastures. This gives ample time for the grasses to regenerate. Most of the food they require is provided from the farm itself. It is not so much for us to interfere as it is to observe and support this simple yet sophisticated ritual.
The herds themselves are small and remain close together for protection. The eating and trampling of grasses subsequently triggers its ability to regenerate, removing excess dead matter and pruning back overgrowth. Through eating, digesting, and ultimately defecating on the go, they provide the necessary fertilizer for sustained vegetative growth.
We all play a vital role in our ecosystem. It is important for people to walk softly and always be stewards of the land and recognize that our relationship with animals is valuable, important, and honorable. Every act is one which contributes to the improvement of soil biology, biodiversity, the health of our animals, and water management best practices, so future generations can continue to enjoy the beauty of this place.

Daily Care for a healthier future
Nature continues to be our teacher and guide. Designing our lives in alignment with the rhythms of nature lends itself to supporting a balanced ecosystem, from which our family and community, the land and animals, the farm, and residences thrive.
We believe that these gestures contribute to significant change. Holistic Management is present in all our decision making. From participating in the growth, care, production, as well as the distribution of goods from our farm, from our daily chores to the seasonal harvest, from planning and preparing food to how it is received in your home - Every action is fueled by our profound wish to create and share a harmonious, healthy, and conscious way of life.
