HOLISTIC MANAGEMENT: RESPECTING NATURE'S RITUALS
HERD ANIMALS WERE ALWAYS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE PORTUGUESE MONTADO, AS THEY CONTRIBUTE FOR ITS NATURAL REGENERATION AND BALANCE.
We understand that every aspect of our agro-eco-system must be subject to careful and perpetual evaluation to fit our purposes of land care and management. For this reason we have engaged in learning and developing good practices on Holistic Management for the thriving of our activity, to create a healthy ecosystem.
Holistic management is an approach developed by biologist Allan Savory to restore grassland soils and minimize the negative effects of climate change and desertification. As grazing animals are an essential part of systems like the Montado, it makes sense to raise them in a way to cause positive impact over the environment. Grazing animals have long evolved along with grasslands. Their digestive tracts are responsible for cycling organic matter, thus playing a vital role on the equilibrium of such ecosystems.
The circle of life in our land
We learned the importance of each element present in Nature, and their vital role to a healthier land - we wish to care for our property, inspired by Nature's rituals in the wild.
Our animals are raised within in a way that our fields are not overgrazed and most of the food they need is provided within our farm. Herd animals have evolved to remain close together and graze on the move for the sake of their protection. Cattle eat and trample grasses that regenerate subsequently. Trampling removes dead matter, eating gentle prunes the plants and, by defecating on the go, they provide the nutrients necessary to regenerate the food they eat.
By mimicking this, playing with time of stay in each plot and the correct time for the pasture to regenerate we do contribute to the improvement of soil biology, natural diversity, the physical health of our animals, and water cycle. Following the same principles, all beings play a vital role in our ecosystem. Herbivores build soil health, birds eat bugs and then, fertility and health is built throughout the system to grow healthy food and regenerate, perpetuating and sustaining the very place we live.
Daily Care for a healthier future
By following Nature's example, we designed the paths for our animals to thrive, but a balanced ecosystem that contributes in many ways for an healthy sustainable way of living.
We believe that these gestures can contribute to big changes towards a new agriculture — which means the production, transformation and distribution, shortening the distance between the farmers and consumers. Holistic Management is present in all our decision-making. From our daily chores to the planning and preparing of food and meals and how they can get to you, we always have sustainability in mind - and the profound wish to create a healthier, more conscious and more balanced way of living.
