Casas Na Areia

The Project

CASAS NA AREIA WAS ORIGINALLY OUR FAMILY’S HOLIDAY HOME, BUT SOON BECAME A PLACE TO WELCOME OUR FRIENDS AND GUESTS.
It was the first time we understood the importance of the passage of time and cultural heritage when building a home, and we wished to share it with whoever comes to visit.

Our home’s renovation was carried out by our good friend and architect Manuel Aires Mateus, and its unique design connects nature and contemporary architecture, while honoring the simplicity of the original fishermen’s houses.

The Houses

CASAS NA AREIA HAS 4 HOUSES: THE THATCHED WALLS AND THE SAND FLOOR REVIVE THE MEMORY OF THE OLD FISHERMEN’S HOUSES, WHILE THE MINIMALISM OF CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE HIGHLIGHTS THE SPACE’S SIMPLICITY.

HOUSE 1. The traditional thatched house holds the living area, with a fully equipped kitchen to prepare meals, a long wooden table, and relaxing sofas to contemplate the view. The sand floor (heated in winter) invites guests to slow down, encouraging serenity and togetherness.
HOUSE 2 & 3 . These white minimalistic houses have a bedroom and en-suite bathroom each, in a calm and cool atmosphere with a view to the surrounding nature.
HOUSE 4 . This house has two bedrooms and two bathrooms, which can easily be used independently, or connecting to one another - the ideal solution for those with children.

Casas na Areia has a small swimming pool that faces the beautiful rice fields, providing refreshment during hot summer days.

Outdoors

Casas na Areia is located in Comporta, one hour south from Lisbon. The region is well known for its white sandy beaches, great wines, fresh fish and the beautiful rice paddies.

It is integrated on the natural reserve of the river Sado, which is home to a great variety of wildlife such as flamingos, storks and dolphins. It is also  one of the best places in Portugal for bird watching.
